Hello fellow anglers. I had three brave anglers this morning because as soon as we turned out onto MRGO we were greeted with nothing but black clouds full of rain in every direction. They were especially omnious looking in the area that I wanted to fish first. We headed that way anyway to see just how bad it was near my first fishing hole. The waters were choppy and the skies were dark but they raise them tough in Kentucky and they said go for it. We went to a spot we have been killing them in and set anchor expecting some quick action. We got a couple of buckets full of Campo’s live shrimp and started chunking at them. We put a few in the boat but I was getting worried about the weather closing in on us so a lot of my attention was on our safety. We caught several nice trout, missed a lot more and then the porpoisies moved in and the bite stopped. We quickly pulled anchor when it became clear the storm that was in the west was moving east (which is exactly opposite of most front in our area). We ran west into MRGO and caught a few along the rocks but they were scattered out. We continued to stick and move until I knew it was time to seek some sort of shelter and I ran for a rig that we were able to get off the boat and under a concrete structure. JUST IN TIME! The rain came and came and came. We even tried some fishing while the thunderstorm was raving (I told you these were hard core guys) but had no luck. After about two hours of waiting it finally passed and we went in search of the elusive trout. We went in toward the islands and the birds were everywhere. We were pulling up fish after fish but the majority of the fish were very small and we had to throw them back. We continued in and found a few trout, reds and black drum in various spots but by that time the tide had almost stopped and the fish bite was very, very slow. We hung in there until 3 pm and them called it a day. We ended up with a nice box of fish and some great company and stories about LSU and Kentucky basketball during the Dale Brown era when we had Shaq and Chris. All in all a good day on the water (which always trumps a great day at work) and several bags of Louisiana fillets to bring back to Kentucky with them. My fishermen were Dean Allen, William Bryant and Andy Crowley and I hope they get to come back to better weather and their limits of trout and redfish.
